“Fool’s Gold” brooch is an imaginary mineral specimen, made with anodised niobium, that plays with perceived values of materials. The golden brown cubes growing out of the rough rock represent iron pyrite, that often grows in beautifully chaotic cube crystals. This mineral is an inexpensive material, but can resemble gold to the untrained eye, therefore earning the nickname “fool’s gold”. The focus of this brooch is the angular shapes of the cube crystals juxtaposing the rough rock. Yet amongst the iridescent blue and purple lie flakes of real gold. Which is of higher value?

This contemporary art brooch is made using the ancient technique of chasing and repousse, from niobium. It has been anodised to blue/purple and golden brown and riveted onto a hand fabricated silver back using 18ct yellow gold.
